Make yourself at home and get to know the Luther Forest community. Talk about neighborhood issues, the Town of Malta, the Luther Forest Technology Campus, Ballston Spa, Saratoga Lake, and beyond.
Did you see in the Gazzette that the state &Malta & Ballston are going to talk about 2 more roundabouts on 67? One by Stewarts and one a little further along. They are really going NUTS! There will be a discussion in September. I just can't believ it. The intersection by Stewarts & Eastline doesn't need a round about. The light and turning lane there are just fine.
I think both of those intersections need roundabouts. Eastline is a pretty busy intersection, and you always have to stop at that light. It would be nice to cruise on through. Brookline is downright dangerous. There are always people trying to turn left from the westbound lane which causes backups, and I don't know how many times I've had someone cut me off as they pull out onto 67 from Brookline. As traffic increases, these intersections will only get worse.
What I'm wondering is why did we just spent a bunch of money on the Eastline intersection last year when they are going to rebuild it again in two years?
I am glad to see the two town boards will be meeting together to talk about issues affecting both towns. With the amound of interdependency, this should happen more often. Good relations with our neighboring towns is a benefit to all of us.
I say bring on the roundabouts. I don't know why so many people are opposed to them. They sure as heck beat sitting at a red light (especially when the intersection is otherwise empty) and studies have shown that roundabouts are much safer than regular intersections (in part because they eliminate left turns and slow down the speed of traffic going through the intersection - nobody is speeding up to beat a yellow light).
One study showed that accidents resulting in injury fell >75% and accidents resulting in death decreased by 90% compared to normal intersection.
Therefore, based on 1)convenience, 2)safety, and 3)decreased pollution from cars idling needlessly at red lights, I wish we would convert all our intersections to roundabouts.
GRRRRRR - I hate those roundabouts and so do many other people. I don't find them safe at all except when no one else is going thru them. I've been cut off many times by speeding/non-yielding people. Maybe injuries and deaths have gone down, but I bet accidents have increased. Everyday I see pieces of glass in them. I dread the day the roundabout gets finished at the end of Partridge Drum. I can see it all now - someone speeding down Dunning entering the roundabout at a high rate of speed and someone having already entered the roundabout from Partridge. It should be interesting. The MPH in a roundabout is 30 not 50 like many people are going. Oh well, nothing we can do about it now. No wonder Saratoga Hospital wants to build by the horse farm.
I don't know about our roundabouts, but I'd bet the data are out there. It would be interesting to see whether accidents have increased or decreased since they were built. I would guess there might be a small bump in accidents when they first went in as people were unfamiliar with them and a steady decline since as people have gotten used to them.
I love the idea of roundabouts on 67 (Stewarts), despite the recent work that has been done there (actually, it will probably be easier now, to install a roundabout there). That light is always backed-up.
It would also be great to improve the walkingpath to Shenetahah Park. I'm sure the folks in Century Farms (coming down Eastline) would appreciate it.
I've had to sit, many-a-times, through two light cycles there. Rediculous. Bring on the round-abouts! Another place where it really needs it: Old Post Road and Northline. Really bad there in the AM.
I can honestly say I havnt met ANYONE in person in the forest who has had something negative to say about the roundabouts... I mean I can safely say that the overall feeling is of ambivalence. But come on... reduced wait time, and incredibly low cost of maintenance. Its a win win.
No offense but the people that don't like them are older. Its too be expecting, older people do not like change, period. We should be worrying about the efficiency of a traffic future, this is an investment that is actually worth somthing, Id say even more so than a downdown or the tech park. Best to plan for the future instead of cottleing the past.
Has anyone read the paper latley? Sometime last week in The Saratogian the projects for the 2 new roundabouts on Dunning Street are running behind by about 2 months, apparently National Grid was suppose to move a majority of the power poles so the paving company could start phases of the road. Basically until the poles are moved there is not much more the Delsignor construction co. can do excpet wait and possibly extend the construction into next year.
Anybody know what the article is talking about here? "The highway frontage is zoned primarily for commercial use in Ballston, where at least one major commercial project is approved but unbuilt."

The hospital?
There's a 7.24 acre tax-parcel (229.-2-27) which exists as the extreme southeast corner of the horse farm adjoining both the I-87 and Rt-67 Right of ways.
The owner is the Malta Hotel L.L.C, judging by the area, it seems we're looking at another hotel.

Yah, I'm having trouble negotiating my wheelchair around those roundabouts. Seems when the wheels on the left side ride the curb I almost tip over. Give me a break, almost everyone I talk to says they hate them. Most be you only talk to "younger" people. Try the 50 and up generation. "The older folks"

The hospital?
No, the hospital and the entire former horse farm is in Malta. I think the article is referencing the property at the northwest corner of the Route 67/Eastline intersection across the street from Stewarts.

Oh yeah - that's got to be it. I had forgotten about that piece of property that has been sitting there with nothing but the sign announcing the coming development.

Roundabouts are good. What problem do you have with them? Most negative people tend to hate things, so it makes sense jp and her friends hate them. jp is usually good for a rant on something new each week.
As I've heard from folks in Ballston, they feel that Rte 67 is one of the few areas where commercial development seems appropriate in their town. Our Master Plan describes Rte 67 as a more rural less developed area. They see the Eastline Rd area as a great place for housing. We have seen it as one of the last remaining open space/farming areas in Malta. The dividing line is Eastline Road. The state wants to redo Rte 67. To whatever extent possible, they want to take everyone's perspective into account. From the meeting I attended with DOT, a roundabout at Eastline and Rte 67 is on the happening side of probable.
