Question: What other issues do you consider important when considering who to vote for?
We've hashed around the downtown plan, but is there anything else? |
Other important "general" issues that I think are worthy of consideration:
(1) a commitment to volunteerism within the town of Malta; (2) commonality with the residents of Malta (i.e., only another homeowner would truly understand the tax burdens that the town's homeowners face each year); (3) combination of experience and/or education with the issues that will be facing our town. Whether we like it or not, our town will continue to be in the spotlight and we have an obligation to vote in those councilpersons with the best experience and qualifications. |

And we care about your opinion because......help me out here.

Because she was asked for it. |

People who are intelligently qualified to lead. You don't need a degree to be smart. You just have to be smart. |

As a parent of children in Luther Forest, my top concern is getting an elementary school built in Malta. I do not want to continue sending my kids to that decrepit old school in Ballston Spa. It's not even handicap accessible. It's old and outdated. With Malta growing, our town needs a school near Cramer Road. It's the perfect location. Luther Forest is the largest neighborhood in Malta, with the largest concentration of kids in the school district. We need a school closer to home. |

My kids are out of the elementary school, but I would have loved it if we had a school right here in Malta. I do know that Sue Nolen supported the issue, but in all honesty, I do not know where the other candidates stand on this issue. Anyone else know the answer to this? |

I would support a school in Malta and while Cramer Road would be a good location, perhaps the Town would be amenable to locating the school closer to the future downtown so that students can walk to and from school or walk to the downtown for lunch. The only downside to this would be that it may take some prime taxable/commercial land off of the tax rolls. Malta Avenue School is no longer adequate to the physical and intellectual needs of our district's students. Malta would be the perfect location. |

Sorry, nope... PhDs only. |

I would like to see town board members who are unique in their thinking. Who can step outside the republican box and make decisions based on the needs of our community, even if it's not popular with the GOP. I would like leadership that discourages the nepotism that is rampant at town hall and on the republican committee. I would like leadership that recognizes how valuable our emergency services volunteers are and the importance of supporting those organizations financially. I would like leadership that recognizes our veterans and is willing to splurge to celebrate and honor them once a year. I would like to see individual town board members pick up separate causes within our community and make a difference. I would like leadership that promotes TRUE community by listening to what the people want and not skewed surveys. I don't want much! |

Not a bad Idea Planner but I'm not sure I want elementary kids wandering along Rt. 9 at lunchtime... but if we landed the coveted Sue Nolan Occupational Vocational Training School here in Malta, then by all means, let them spend their lunchmoney at one of our fine dineries. |
MALTAHACK: Whatever you may be referring to as the Sue Nolan Occupational Vocational Training School, there is a HVCC learning center under construction and there have been meetings about BOCES programs also being run in cooperation with LFTC/NYSERDA.

So, where do other candidates stand on the school issue? I have 2 high schoolers now, but a new elementary school would be a huge benefit. I haven't read the entire BSCD school plan - but I know it's a thought.
Community Service - this is a good one. I didn't think of that, but it does make sense. Volunteering in your community shows involvement and creates strong community ties. It also makes one aware of the issues facing a community that do not always make the front page. I know Malta has a Rotary Club, not sure what other organizations are here (aside of the EMS / Fire dept, etc). Definitely a need for forward thinking, outside the proverbial box. We did have a Veterans event last year - I think it was a first with the parade and all, the weather did not cooperate though. |

Mel - Excellent point. Community service is a very important addition to education and experience for a candidate. I would like to think Cynthia and I are candidates that have exhibited very strong community involvement. Cynthia is an active member of Malta Sunrise Rotary and sits on the Town Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of Assessment Review and Chairs the Malta Youth Commission. I am also an active member of Malta Sunrise Rotary, the Malta Business & Professional Association and the Malta Trails Committee. I sat on the Ballston Spa Jr Baseball League Board of Directors for the past 4 years, serve as a certified umpire and coach and currently serve as Chairman of the League's Rules, Ethics & Discipline Committee. Outside of Malta, I sit on the Siena College Department of Environmental Studies Community Advisory Board and I am an active member of the Capital District Planning Association. A track record of community involvement is important and I like to think the experience of the two Democratic Party candidates shows this. It was too bad about the rain at the Veterans Day event. Hopefully next year will be much better. |

In addition, Cynthia Young is also a board member on the Ballston Spa Education Foundation which has raised almost a quarter of a million dollars since 1996 in order to provide grants to teachers in the Ballston Spa School District for teaching aids that cannot be purchased through the school's budget (i.e., smart boards; science kits; rock climbing wall for gym class; digital microscopes; keyboards for music class, etc.)
Cynthia is the treasurer for this organization and she co-chairs one of main fundraising events that the BSEF has each year - the golf tournament. BSEF Grants |

Again, is a Hack worse than a Maniac?....And I wasnt refering to any of the fine institutions of learning that have located here in Malta, I was simply refering to Sue's level of higher learning. |

I am sick and tired of listening to you put people down for their level of education. I do not see myself as a 'Sue Nolan Supporter' in any way but I am a big fan of facts. Sue Nolan has come out and stated that NO she doesn't have a College Degree (thanks for reiterating Bob we get it). The fact of the matter is the woman grew up in a different time. She didn't need a college degree to become a successful professional business woman. You can try to look down on her all you want for the fact that the woman doesn't have that fancy diploma like you but the fact of the matter is she has a job and she's good at it. So do you think you can move on to something relevant now? |

there will be no veterans day parade sausville and budget group took that away. he is so un-american! i hope all the vets all over can feel the smack in the face. thats fact. |
Was there actually a Veteran's Day parade in Malta in the past? I must have missed it over the last seven years. |
