AMD still mulling Malta

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has completed its initial design review and expects to make a decision by the end of the year on whether to immediately proceed with groundbreaking and construction on a proposed $3.2 billion chip fabrication plant in Malta, or defer it a while longer, an AMD representative said today.

Every politician that opens their flap makes this sound like a done deal .... i said it before and i'll say it again ... this ain't happening.

Are you talking about Hooker Chemical (definitely a bad thing) or hookers as in a house in the forest in lieu of the AMD plant. Certainly the latter would be the best option of all. Of course the ladies and their patrons wouldn't need all that water....

Company to decide by year's end on when to build $3.2 billion plant

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Senior management at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. will decide by the end of the year whether the company will break ground in the spring for a $3.2 billion semiconductor fabrication plant in Malta or will defer the groundbreaking.

Ward Tisdale, AMD's manager of global community affairs, said those were the two most likely scenarios as the company decides how quickly to pursue the new plant.


He added that AMD has until July 2009 to decide whether to proceed with the project. After that, $1.2 billion in state incentives will expire.

Tisdale was in Saratoga Springs Tuesday to participate in The 2007 Economic Summit: Entrepreneurship and Growth in Upstate New York, which was held at the Gideon Putnam Resort and Spa. During a break, he said the company "continues to be very excited" about its plans to come to Malta. The 1.2 million-square-foot plant would employ 1,200 workers.

AMD has two fabrication plants in Dresden, Germany, and outsources some production.

Its leading-edge chips typically are manufactured in-house, Tisdale said. The Malta plant, at the Luther Forest Technology Campus, would begin production as soon as 2011 or 2012, producing AMD's latest chips.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based semiconductor firm already has a research presence at the Albany NanoTech complex at the University at Albany and at IBM Corp. in East Fishkill.

Also on Tuesday, AMD announced it had completed a debt offering, raising $1.48 billion from institutional investors. Its shares (NYSE: AMD) fell 30 cents, or 2.3 percent, to close Tuesday at $12.54. They were up 5 cents in after-hours trading.

They have 2 years to make a decision.
This plant will go to India - that's the where the Tech market and Tech jobs are heading.

I don't see anything new in this article, except that they are still able to raise capital. They have been telling us all along that they will make their decision on how to proceed by the end of the year.

And their "decision" by the end of the year isn't really a decision. It's more like they are deciding about when to decide.
