I guess this would keep the control more local. But the devil may be in the details.

Oh, lord, Saratoga County in charge! Forget selling. Abandon our homes and move to Chernobyl now.

With all the complaints that I have heard from Malta residents about this in the past year, why not pool your monies and buy it.
Either put up or shut up. The state, county, and town governments hire professional consultants to tell them what and how to run things. These people have more knowledge on running things. If anyone thinks they know more, then why aren't you help running this operation. I think the county can do better than the Democrat run state. |

The SEDC created the Luther Forest EDC, so this is just a reshuffling of the deck to get the state EDC to back off. This will hopefully keep it a local project with local input and with local priorities in mind. I think it is the right direction.

There's a piece in the Post Star about the possible impact of a change in state leadership of economic development efforts on the movement by the state to take over the tech park. It mentions that the Northumberland Town Supervisor is leading the county's effort to purchase the land and thereby maintain county control over the project. What the he!! does the Supervisor of Northumberland have to do with a project site in Malta and Stillwater? More and more it seems to me that the residents of Malta and thier community needs had nothing to do with the planning of this dog and pony show. Even the Rev. Peter finally acknowledged that some very scary chemicals will be part of the project. I guess the HEALTH of Malta and Stillwater residents was of no particular interest either. But then, what do I know.
|
||||
|
There still hasn't been any info on how they are going to dispose of those "scary chemicals".

Merry, LFTC is a regional effort. Saratoga County started it and wants to continue to control it, for the health and welfare of those of us living here. Keeping control of the park local is what this is all about.
Kathie, there are reams of pages in the environmental impact statement about the transport, storage, and clean-up of hazardous chemicals. If you are interested in that info, it is all available online. It's about 500 pages of the most boring stuff you'll ever read, but it's there. |

I spoke with an engineer from Germany that is working on some of those issues at the Tech Park. He is concerned about the disposition of the chemicals as well. He tried to put it in layman terms about a waste pipe, etc. but "off the record" - he doesn't think its enough safety and was concerned abut ground leakage. However, he thought that a Japanese company was going to set up shop here for the recycling or re usage of the chemicals used for the chips.

This isn't something I want to be right about, Kathie. But your German's comments sure run counter to the normal booster club reactions we normally see here. Greed is a terrible thing. It makes people stupid and worse.

It's no secret I was skeptical about the tech park from the beginning. And I hike with my dog throughout the park and often come into contact with the engineers that work at the plant. This particular engineer will be working permanently at the plant and told me he purchased a home in Wilton. I asked why he didn't buy a home in Malta and that's how he came to tell me he had concerns about the chemical seepage into the ground. The new Exit 12 hospital site will get their water from Clifton Park. I wish our water came from Clifton Park. Our wells are too close to the tech park for my comfort. And I, too, hope the engineer is incorrect in his assessment.

There's already too much crud creeping through the soil of Luther Forest.

What kind of engineer is he? He doesnt sound like a geotech engineer. If he was he'd know about the numerous monitoring wells that exist between the site and the wells used to exract our water. It should mention in the EIS that these wells have been sampled multiple times per year since the site was named a superfund site in the 80's and have consistantly shown the water to be uncontaminated. I would expect this monitoring to continue especially with a project of this scope being implimented.

I don't know what engineering project he is working on for the tech park. My recollection is that he said the contaminants will run through an underground pipe and his concern is that if the pipe leaks or breaks - it will dispose the chemicals into the soil. Interestingly, I have met and chatted with more than a few GF engineers and they have all been from different countries - predominately Asian and German. I have only met one American engineer who relocated from Boston, Mass. So all those jobs promised for our local people must not be in the engineering field.

I (Rev. Peter) have been talking about the chemicals since the inception of this plan. My push for more stringent monitoring and reporting that were included in the original legislation but were overruled by a majority of the (previous) Town Board who were satisfied that the state and federal regulations are sufficient. There are still some requirements that go above and beyond the bare minimum, but we'll have to see if they survive. |

I am in the software industry and i do know in that area ....many local people have been hired by GF. |

That's good to hear!!! |

Rev. Peter - do you know if there is any truth to the rumor that a Japanese company has rented office space in the new Wilbur Bank building to deal with the recycling or reuse of the chemicals from the Tech Plant? |
||||
|
Tokyo Electric (or something like that) is reported to be going into the building just north of the Community Center, along with Wilbur Bank. Obviously it will be office space and no chemicals will be involved at that site. I don't know just what they do, but it is related to Global Foundries. |
