From The Business Review:
http://www.bizjournals.com/albany/stories/2007/08/20/daily34.html Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) says he's gotten assurances from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. that it plans on building a microchip plant in Saratoga County. Schumer said he sought the assurance to address local concerns people may have about AMD's plans. AMD, the country's No. 2 computer microchip maker behind Intel Corp., announced last year plans to build a $3.2 billion microchip plant in Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta, N.Y. Schumer said he would help in any way to make sure AMD's blueprint turns into a final plant. Schumer said on Thursday he received a personal assurance from Advanced Micro Devices' CEO, Hector Ruiz, that the company is committed to moving forward here. The senator said he personally called Ruiz and was assured the plan was moving along "without any snags," Schumer said. "Today I'm thrilled to report that AMD's CEO personally assured me that the company's plan to construct a $3.2 billion factory in Saratoga County is right on track." The state of New York has offered the Sunnyvale, Calif., company $1.2 billion in financial incentives to build the factory. The company has until July 2009 to make a final decision. After that time, the deal with the state would have to be renegotiated. AMD spokesman Travis Bullard said the company's plans for a new fab in New York "are on track." "AMD has drafted an initial design review of the potential fab. We are pleased with the outcome of the process and feel that we have the right draft plans ready to go," he said. Bullard said AMD now has two decisions to make: First, to determine the right timeline, then to initiate the project. "AMD expects to make a decision on the timeline for this project by the end of the year," he said. rderrico@bizjournals.com | 518-640-6807 |
