Oh, Mike, even you have to know what a crock that is. Unless you're part of the great Iraquois Nation, somebody in your past showed up on these shore speaking something the currently resident population didn't.

Yes Merry, I have grandparents from Poland, great-grandparents from Germany, and great-great grandparents from Ireland. My ancestors have been a part of the melting pot and now this Polish-German-Irishman American loves apple pie, baseball, hot dogs, barbeques, 4th of July parades; admire our Founding Fathers, love my country and proudly fly it's flag. Although, I can't stand American Idol, so I haven't totally been asimulated.

Jimster, while we're worrying about controlling our ants, consider this. My ancestors showed up at Ellis also, but I don't think they'd been forced to wait in dire circumstances for a visa to come through. Pretty much one would get on a boat (the Atlantic, unlike the Rio Grand, is way to big to wade or swim), sail to New York or whatever, and be checked for disease. If one looked healthy, off to the tenements s/he'd go. And may I remind us all that, the second last time a public building was blown up and many lives taken, the bomber was a nice blond boy from the Midwest who'd been friendly with another fellow from Buffalo. Hmmmm.

Yes Jimster, correct. They came here, legally, to work; not to have anchor babies, free health care, free education or to suck the teet of this great country's social structure. If they want to work, let them get in line and be processed so our immigration department can govern the affects of the influx of people.

Merry, Ellis Island too? You're not related to the Drongs out of Krakow are you? (We may be related).

Merry,
First, thanks for the ant advice!! I respectfully have to tell you, your all over the place!!
I have degree in Criminal Justice, and know, Crime has been here forever, and will be here forever!! But securing our borders is another issue!! We have had multiple bombings in New York City, all of the muslim Fascist side. This is now a large scale War, whether we want to accept it or not. As such, we don't need 12 million illegals trapsing over the border unimpeded! What is wrong with them coming in legally? And there has been since the early 1900's a systmem of checks, and limitations on immigration. Why should illegal immigrants be allowed to break the law?
If you want to sponsor an illegal immigrant, and let them live with you, and food and cloth them, and find a job for them...that's your choice. I choose to work hard, support my family, and live my life accordingly. I shouldn't have to support 12 million illegals! Its hard enough with Ballston Spa School Taxes!!

Sorry, Mike, I'm of the Mahoneys of somewhere in southern Ireland. It's embarrassing that I don't know the exact location.

OOOH, but that already happened in Malta. You know the last time I was at a town meeting a young woman was asking permission to build a duplex (yes, ONE duplex) on a piece of property adjacent to an existing housing development. The town fathers and mothers debated the merits of putting a duplex on the last remaining lot in an area zoned previouly for and now built up with McMansions (my phrase, not theirs). Out of respect for the old vision for that neighborhood, the mothers and fathers denied her the variance and instead granted permission for her to build a single family home. She acquiesced, but it was clear that her home would have been far more affordable with an income-producing unit attached. Oh, well, at least the McMansions were protected. Apparently, the residents on Mayapple aren't McMansiony enough to warrent protection from having five story appartment buildings next to their back porches. But then this IS a free country (not free enough of Mexicans for your taste admittedly) and the developer did have the right to what ever he wanted on his land. Oh, but I'm confused, how did that apply to that young woman who sought permission to build one (yes, ONE) duplex.

I was at that meeting also. What I didn't understand is that the area wasalready zoned for duplexesand they insisted on a single family home. You're right,a duplex does make housing more affordable...so much for entry level housing for young families. Rumour has it "THEY" may be considering duplexes or townhomes for the "Ruth Roerig" property (the now non-existence barns and trees place) next door. Wouldn't that be a hoot!
